By the time the student is taking algebra, he will be looking at $3000 if the funds are invested in the S&P 500. Surely that will be a solid reason for wanting to understand the math. And Algebra 1 is the perfect place to explain the phenomenon. Personal experience will be a great teacher.
The big problem today is algebra teachers do not know the math. I know because I have tried to discuss it and I find them clueless. But, they can be taught to see the big picture.
