Might also be part of the reason why Team USA defeated Canada in overtime. Hockey in Canada is such a religion that they make sure every kid gets to play, where in the USA not everyone can afford to play.

In the US, lots of kids probably have to play with a reduced roster -- so when they get to overtime and change over to 3-on-3, the Americans have a lot more experience (since childhood) playing that way. Such experience can make a difference in a game like the recent Olympic championship -- and when the teams are as uniformly excellent as the best Olympic teams in the world are, small differences in skill and experience can be the deciding factor.

Now I suppose it is different, but c'mon, hockey is Canada's national pastime!
Oh, and that year they started a hockey team -- the Midland Chemics won the lower peninsula championship, beating all comers -- and then got clobbered in the state finals against a much smaller class-C school, the Painesdale-Jeffers Jets, representing the UP. Maybe it's different today, but even under the best conditions, hockey in the USA, even in northern states, competes for attention and resources with all those other sports.
And yes, the USA-CAN rivalry, especially in hockey, is a great rivalry. Canada wins more often than not, but US can't be taken for granted. Canada was by all measures the better team this year, but a funny thing happened on the way to the championship. The better team does not always win, and there are a lot of reasons this can happen. For instance, I think competition is absolutely horrible for politics. Why two parties except to create competition? George Washington railed against parties for this reason. Politicians should never compete! They may disagree on ideas, but rational discussion and truth should rule the day.
I would argue that our present situation proves my point. We are at a stagnation point due to political competition. Both parties rely on Billions of our dollars to try to compete with their opposites. Is that rational?
The other place where we hear about the value of competition is in business. I am here to tell you that business hates competition! They do not hate the other companies they compete with, they hate needing to compete! Business is the opposite of sports.
What business loves is an unfair advantage. That makes them winners. It is not about competing, it is about crushing anyone who tries to compete. The unfair advantage makes the company rich, competition makes them poor. Being the low bidder is not a winning proposition. It immediately makes you start questioning your evaluation of the things you assumed to be true. It’s like, “What the Hell did I overlook?”
The key to having that unfair advantage is in the specifications. If you can get your product’s special, patented, sole source goodie specified, you get to name your price and there is no competition. Bingo! You love it!
This brings me back to politics. If a business can get its special, patented, sole source goodie named as a necessary piece of a multi-billion dollar project, who even cares? Your business pockets millions and you can just decide to donate a couple hundred thousand to the politicians who inserted the right words into the appropriations package.
So, let’s applaud the Gold winning hockey team tonight and appreciate their competitive spirit. Then, open your eyes and look at the damned politicians who benefit from no competition by inventing competition where it doesn’t even belong!

Our 37 year old athletic son had never ice skated in his life until 6 years ago when his boss invited him to join a Vet/First Responders League. He signed up for skating lessons and applied himself. He enjoyed playing so much that he has been on three different leagues at one time and started his own D league team. He and his wife are now huge fans of the Tampa Bay Lightning even though our family never paid any attention to hockey in our lives. Most recently our son has been teaching our five year old grandson to skate on the weekends. I don’t know how or why hockey has surged in the US but I support it! Soccer was surging when I was in high school and our kids played even though my husband constantly referred to it as “a communist plot to overthrow America.” He gave up watching football when Kapernick took the knee.

Hockey is amazing - having just come into the sport with our grandson. For a kid who is "too little" to be a goalie - he is an amazing goalie. Most teams are surprised by how well he does. Hockey is amazing - having just come into the sport with our grandson. For a kid who is "too little" to be a goalie - he is an amazing goalie. Most teams are surprised by how well he does. Hockey doesn't discriminate. If you play hard and train hard - you will succeed. Hmmmmm - seems like a good work ethic motto for this nation.
