I graduated HS in 1972, and had a high (good) draft number. Plus I would have been 4-F in all likelihood. So I was one of the lucky ones, but many were not.
There were serious contemplations and conversations back then, before the draft numbers came out, on wether to dodge it to Canada or go….
I lived for a while ca. 2013 in Slocan Valley, a rural part of the BC Interior which was a favored destination for what were called in the 60s-70s the 'Back to the Landers.' Mostly a bunch of American hippies who were dodging the draft. Many married local girls and raised families and still live in that area. Many became organic farmers, and the local farm supply stores were still obviously catering to the marijuana trade. (BC weed is highly sought after, 'Northern Lights' was a popular cultivar.)
By the time we left, the weed trade was being taken over by the Mexican cartels. Instead of a bunch of aging, dirty hippies that came to town occasionally for supplies, the area was being overrun by rough, rasta looking dudes who were obviously of a different bent. It was a good time for leaving, so we moved on. Interesting times, those.
I was never an organic farmer but always an organic gardener…one of the influences from that era. They were interesting times indeed ❤️

In this battle, not only individual citizens but also the several states have been losing their rights and sovereignty. The states, perhaps beginning with Texas, have a much better position to assert themselves in trying to reclaim those rights and set the ship of state back to a proper course. Not necessarily a more legitimate position, but a more credible and powerful one.
