So the plan is to turn pricey office buildings into even pricier apartments or Condos? I think developers need to get their heads out of the clouds. We deal with this constantly in my little town. The town council keeps pushing luxury apartments and high end businesses that most people who live here can’t afford. In the meantime, more and more single parents are living in their vehicles because they can’t pay the ever increasing rent costs and they’re begging for help that never comes. And these are people who actually gave jobs that 4 years ago would’ve been considered well paying. Smh

The converted office bldg. to housing will be used to house all of the illegals that are flooding across the border....and guess who will pay for it all? The taxpayers.

They have been pushing this in SF but part of the problem is the infrastructure is old and not built to handle it - i.e. plumbing. Yes, office buildings use water, but people aren't taking showers, doing laundry, etc. Plus there is little in way of grocery options, etc.

Expand full comment

Right. So developers would be heavily invested I. The buildings which is why they’d be expensive. Look for them to rezone to “mixed retail”. That’s very popular around here with developers because they get property rezoned more easily and they don’t have to actually lease the retail space to anyone. We have an apartment build here that has been finished for at least 5 years and there’s. Ever been any businesses in the retail part. Heck, they didn’t even bother to finish the floors! It’s still gravel. Smh

There are lots of those mixed use here as well and it's the same thing - most of the ground floor is empty.

They built the first luxury apartment and when they wanted to build two more, residents gave them a bunch of flak about it. They kept saying it was needed because the first one was “at or near” capacity. Later I learned, quite by accident, that 20 units were being rented out as Air BnBs. Folks would rent two apartments, use one as an Air BnB and lease retail space for their small business. Not denying that was pretty smart. My problem was nobody knew there were air bnbs there. When I mentioned this to one of the councilmen, he got very snarky with me. It’s not “at or near” capacity when 20 units are only being used as air bnbs. Frankly I’m flabbergasted that anyone wants to rent an Airbnb in this town since there is literally nothing here but retail and fast food. The only time I can think anyone would rent one would be when the KY Derby rolls around and that’s across the river in Louisville. Our town council is not concerned about the local residents even though they are the ones who are working at the retail and fast food places. They’re concerned with bringing in people from outside of here, which would be fine if they also showed some concern for the people already living and working here.

In my town they actually converted existing vacant stores in town and built expensive apartments above and a parking garage. It is still for lease. It is beautiful for a large city but grotesquely too large in this pretty little town. The fallout is a raise in rent for the other apartments above store fronts and in town. It doesn’t directly affect me but I wonder about my property taxes.

Expand full comment

We were told that when we had more apartments then everybody’s rent would come down. Since when has rent ever come down? Of course the exact opposite happened. The new apartments were rented at “market rate” and the older apartments increased their rent too. Well the market rate they geared our little town to was Louisville Kentucky. You see developers consider us a suburb of Louisville. Never mind we’re in a completely different state (Indiana) with a whole ass river between us. It’s beyond stupid.

Expand full comment

There’s a lot of that stupid going around. Tulsa has the same kind of thinking, it’s all about downtown. We left and moved to the country an hour away. Don’t miss the city one bit, but it’s sad this is happening everywhere.

Expand full comment

Yep. We have three smallish towns together here and they’re all about that “downtown” stuff. My town even made a “new” downtown. That’s where the money is being spent. Two luxury apartment buildings, a luxury hotel coming soon along with a convention center and Amtrak train station. Of course we broke ass people will never see it. I’ll probably be dead by the time all of that is done anyway. In the meantime, in our older neighborhoods, the town now has an ordinance that says kids can’t play basketball in the street nor can people walk or jog in the street. There are no sidewalks. These are smaller, older homes with 1 car garages and driveways. Code enforcement officer threatened to fine each person violating that ordinance $130. Oh and you can’t park in your own yard either or you’ll also get fined. They wouldn’t even let one man lay gravel next to his driveway giving him another driveway to park in. Do we own our own property or not?

"Do we own our own property or not?"

The definition of fascism is owning something but having no control over how it is used.

Problem is, people even on town councils in little Hoosier towns all have a bit of dictator in them. It comes out when they feel a need for a power fix. And it's everywhere, not just Indiana.

Power is corrupting….unless one with that power deliberately does NOT use it, and uses (in my case) a family member to warn us of abusing it. My husband was wonderful in that regard.👍

Holy cow! That’s horrible!! I guess they want everyone fat and sluggish from no exercise. And no, we really don’t own our property as long as “they” can slap a lien on it if taxes aren’t paid.

They want the kids to go to the parks. Oh but they would have to be driven to a park. Our town leaders are just like DC. They live in their own bubble.

Interestingly, Portland OR. tried this in their "warehouse" district a generation ago. I left there shortly before it became a popular approach, but the discerning could expect the 20+ year implications as a lesson in the true economic value (versus inflated hype).

I knew CV was BS from the get go when they were pushing the nursing homes. First "nursing home" tends to be a catch all phrase. Most facilities are assisted living facilities, not skilled nursing. ALF provide custodial care to aid when you are at a point where you can't perform the activities of daily living and usually only have CNAs, not RNs on staff. They tossed a medical bomb into the laps of people who may have tried, but were not equipped to handle the problem. The correct protocol would have been hospitalization as this was an acute event. When I had family members in assisted living, any time there was an acute illness like flu or c-diff, off to the hospital they would go, in part because you have a lot of frail people in these places and it would spread.but as you pointed out, they ignored all the resources provided. Why?

Cuomo is hardly the only governor who needs to answer questions about their COVID-19 policies surrounding nursing homes. My own governor in Michigan needs to answer the same questions. The FBI was looking into these policies back in 2020, and had questions for 4 different governors, including those two: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/justice-dept-requests-nursing-home-covid-19-data-from-four-democratic-governors/2020/08/26/9003d86e-e7d8-11ea-bc79-834454439a44_story.html

When they get done with Cuomo, they need to call every other Governor like the Bastard in OHIO Gov Mike DeWine because he did the same thing here. Gov Whitmer in Michigan and so on.... Besides the deaths in nursing homes the ones done in the hospitals by DOCTORS and NURSES needs to be put under a Heat Lamp. Hospitals in OHIO were supposedly paid 80K for every COVID DEATH and Attorney Thomas Renz has evidence of the ordered murders by Doctors per Nurses (whistleblowers) of ER patients for $$$$$$$$. This cannot be swept under the rug but it has been. Each state was a different BOUNTY. What did every one of the Hospitals receive for the deaths? That is a question no one beside RENZ has asked. The amounts per state were mentioned by Flashpoint w Gene Bailey. A bounty was placed on the heads of unsuspecting Patients. What about the girl who had a clear garbage bag placed over her head and left in a hallway per hospital protocol in, I think it was Tennessee. It was open season on Americans for a BIOWEAPON unleashed from our own government and their worldwide partners and the spokesman for the crimes was FAUCI. I want the US REPRESENTATIVE to answer HOW MUCH MONEY they were paid to let it happen? How much PFIZER money did they receive? These vary Ones doing the INQUIRY must also be called to testify on what they did. The money trail is KEY. CDC got 42 Billion from Congress in 2021. WHERE IS THAT MONEY? Where's that Nuremberg trial we were supposed to have? They are all covering this up and probably nothing will come of it. I sure hope TRUMP doesn't sweep this under the rug? Anyone know why RITE AID went out of business after they were the major Jabbers of COVID 19 bioweapon Bullshit? They filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and will be owned by Walgreen afterwards with a newer friendlier Pharmacy Jabber? What a scam!

I would like to see these vacant office buildings converted to some kind of living space if apartments aren’t an option, they could be a kind of long-term “hotel” facility, where a tenant would have a room, but there’s a common space for eating, gym, etc. It would work for single professionals. Or maybe even a senior living facility. There’s untapped potential and the more creative solutions will win.

AiA: "Playing politics with the lives of Americans isn’t advisable or acceptable regardless of which party is doing the politicking."

We must all hold to first principles and be willing to align there (versus under some false sectarian divide that leverages race or gender or social status or brand of toothpaste as a means to divert our attention from those things that truly matter). We must hold these Truths to be more foundational than even our own passioned pursuits!

BB: "That said, a primary aim of the Info War for all Anons should be to spot propaganda in real time so you might help to circumvent the enemy's reality creation engine and prevent the actualization of public mandate for the latest Hegelian agenda."

For me that requires the confident reliance on the Truth that resides outside of human invention (and therefore - in its purest form - human manipulation). I see no other way to define information as propaganda!

GBPH: Once again - thank you for your grasp of history and your ability to frame its importance in the light of a story that runs over millennia!
