Back in 1972 my job transferred me into the city of San Francisco. That place was absolutely beautiful then. I walked everywhere at all times of the day or night, taking in the sights. One night, I walked into a street that led me to a wheelhouse for the cable car system. Musta been around 2 a.m. It happened to be warm that night with no fog. The big 2-storey high doors to the wheelhouse were wide open. What a sight! High-wattage lights were on. Bright! Those giant (were they cast-iron?) wheels were nearly as high as the doors, painted brilliant colors--orange, purple, green, blue--and they were turning steady, steady, steady pulling many tons of steel cable that powers the cable cars; great power on display, almost silent at that time of day. Maybe the noise level would be different in daytime. The only person in sight was me. I stepped inside the door to get a better look and try figure out a little about how it worked. I couldn't make sense of it but I'm still impressed by how, at that at that time of night in a major city, nobody was so worried about sabotage or vandalism that they kept everything locked down. I'm sure someone musta had an eye on me but if so, I never caught a glimpse of them. I stood there just inside those big doors gawking for 20 minutes and then finished my hike. It's a great memory of Life in America.
I visited San Francisco during that period, too, and it was spectacular, both with and without fog. We truly had to see this happen or we would never have the will to change, nor the opportunity! Once the veil is raised, we will rise to the challenge of rebuilding and remember beauty!🙏🙏
