Dave Hayes (Praying Medic) is an excellent resource for amateur radio and off grid communications. He saw the writing on the wall a long time ago and became a licensed ham radio operator. He has been educating people for months now about alternate communications.

Do not forget that the FCC has the authority to 'suspend' amateur radio operations in the event of an 'emergency.' The last time they did that was WW2, but it could happen again anytime. To get a ham license, you have to give the FCC your email address, where they can send you 'updates,' like for instance changes to regulations.

So, depending whose side the government will be on if there is a cyber attack, a ham license could be a useful tool... or just a list for the government of suspected 'subversives.' YMMV...

Expand full comment

You're partly right, @Wild Bill - the gov't can suspend the *licenses* but not the airwaves. Cell phones can be tracked with pretty good precision, even when you're not talking. Portable radio transmitters can be roughly located but only while they're transmitting. The same is true of legally unlicensed amateur radio, such as FRS. There are options ...

Expand full comment

Correct. Should the FCC suspend amateur operations in the guise of an 'emergency,' then operators will be faced with a decision, and some may well choose to defy the ban. That will be an individual choice and it will depend on the situation at hand.

All radio licenses are predicated on serving the public. For hams, it is the ability to provide backup emergency communications. For broadcast services (which are going the way of the dodo bird), proving that you have provided essential public service with your exclusive license is (was) a major part of a license renewal application. Local news, public service announcements, things like that -- was what the FCC wanted to see.

As for cellphones, don't get me started. Whenever they are on, they can be tracked; and for many of them, they are never really off. And many can be enabled to listen remotely, and the owner will not be aware they are being listened to. Cellphones are a totalitarian government's dream. Once again we trade away necessary freedom for a bit of convenience. Those of us who have one, that is. My wife and I own one we use only when we travel, which is rarely, and then only for phone calls. It is a flip-phone and actually powers all the way off, when we turn it off. (You can tell because when you turn it off and come back two weeks later, it is still at 100% charge. Ones that go into a 'standby' sort of mode will drain the battery some, even when 'off.')

Expand full comment

He said he’s never gotten any updates but has to renew the license every 5 yrs.

Expand full comment

Yeah, [they] haven't changed the regs or the rules much recently. Ham radio is not on the 'cutting edge' of politics or technology these days, though they have developed a set of new digital modes that did not exist back in the 60s when my interest peaked. All in all, it is not a bad backup in the event of some sort of disruption to normalcy.

I would offer one piece of advice though: operating a ham radio station is not like tuning into a broadcast from the local FM station, making a phone call, or sending a tweet, text or email. It involves listening to weak, far-away signals being propagated across an often-unstable medium (the ionosphere). Hams have developed means and techniques for communicating successfully under these conditions, but those must be learned and reinforced by practice. Further, keeping antennas, backup power, and other resources and equipment operational requires regular maintenance and testing.

That said, most hams find all of this to be both fun and challenging. They pride themselves on offering robust and reliable backup communication when the stuff hits the fan, and they practice (things called 'field days,' for instance) doing this under adverse conditions. That way they are confident that, if needed, they will be able and available to step up.

Disclaimer: Though I have a life-long interest in radio, I never have gotten my ham ticket. I did have an FCC Radiotelephone Operator First Class license for some time -- this is what you had to have, to be the 'station operator' for a broadcast TV, AM, or FM station. That's the chief engineer at a station, the one legally and technically responsible for the proper operation of the equipment, in compliance with all relevant laws, rules, and regulations.

You are a very cool guy, WildBill 😊

My husband grew up in a fire dept family. He remembers when they had the “red phone” at their house to take emergency calls. Being on the FD cultivates an interest in radios and frequencies. He had a ham license long ago and once talked very clearly to someone in Italy. Then it lapsed.

I, on the other hand, have zero interest in these things…I’m just glad we don’t have to have a scanner on all the time in the house now that he is retired.

😉❤️

The radio waves have a life of their own. Under the right conditions, you can talk to someone halfway around the world clear as a bell. (That would commonly be on the 20 meter band, during a sunspot maximum, near sunrise or sunset when the communications path would be in sunlight.) And then the next day, you have a hard time making it out of your backyard. Things like that are what makes ham radio an interesting hobby.

These days most of the interesting communications on the public-safety bands are encrypted. Scanners are not very useful, you can't tell what is being said. But I remember those back in the 70s, 'Cobra' was a popular brand. A lot of CBers would listen on their scanners and then talk about what was going on. I always had too much to do, to sit around and listen to the police and fire band. I figured if anything important happened, I'd read about it in the paper next day. Ah, those were the days, my friend!

I was struck by the immediate calling of the South Carolina primary for Trump. Correct me if I am wrong, but the actual number of votes counted at that point was very low. This just sets the stage for another situation like we had in the 2020 presidential race. This sets the stage for people to accept the results of a rigged election.

Another thought. Maybe someone should interview people in South Carolina. Why does Haley not have their support? It reminds me of John Edwards. There was absolutely no enthusiasm for him in North Carolina, just like Haley. I talked to friends from both sides when he was running for president and what was most striking was the lack of interest in him as a politician. I wondered then why he was even a serious candidate.

But now that I’m understanding the game board and that it’s been well-used for millennia, it no longer requires a cynical mindset nor a lot of work to decipher. Like Neo fighting Mr. Smith with one hand and without breaking a sweat at the end of the first Matrix movie.

An interesting theory on who killed Navalny from Gilbert Doctorow, an independent political analyst, who holds a doctorate in Russian history from Columbia University. He was interviewed on Redacted (link below).

Who would benefit by causing disruption in Russia (mere weeks before the Russian vote) and, along with the US, is deeply invested in the Ukraine proxy war against Russia? The Brits.

Putin recently told the West: ‘You are pursuing proxy wars against Russia…Beware, we are capable of pursuing proxy wars against you.’

Shortly after Navalny’s death, the Houthis (using Russian arms?) sunk a British Naval Vessel in the Red Sea.

The interview is about 13 min long and worth a listen if anyone has time.

It’s not a good thing to allow the media to call elections virtually immediately following the polls’ closing. Remember it is a 5GW. Many things are not as they seem at first.

That said, Trump will have a lot of positions to fill in his admin come Nov. 6. He should be casting a fairly wide net to make sure that he gets people who are smart and will be loyal. Vivek so far has been playing at the loyalty part, and he's clearly incredibly smart. So he is an obvious candidate -- I read a suggestion recently to make him Director of OMB where he would control funding for the various employees and departments of the Executive Office of the President. That job obviously has a lot of power, and can be used to avoid some of the pitfalls Trump encountered in his first term, where many of the EOP staff were trying to sabotage Trump. They are (were) civil servants protected by law -- Trump also created a 'Schedule F' of jobs now considered as civil servants (Trump can't fire) that would be reclassified as 'policy making' positions (Trump could fire) which the President could replace with his own people. That would significantly expand the power of OMB in implementing Trump's policies.

Between now and then, Trump and key advisors will be looking into the MAGA/A1 qualifications of possible candidates for these myriad positions in his new admin. Trying to suss out if they are sincere, or butt-kissers. And getting rid of the entrenched deep-state bureaucrats who stifled him first go-round, replacing them with loyal staff.

I think Vivek is far too smart to try to play Trump. How loyal Vivek really is, is something Trump will need to figure out. Vivek appears to want to be a part of the inside of Trump's government; where he fits best (assuming Trump judges him loyal) is the question. Vivek is still young; if he wants to be an important figure going forward, now is the time for him to start laying the groundwork.

At a cost of half a million Ukrainian and Russian deaths, which WaPo even mentioned in the preceding paragraph..

Are they really willing to kill people like that for a 'research opportunity?' Apparently so.

That is bad enough; but then remember that our distinguished senior senator from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham, recently said that the whole goal was to "kill Russians."

Heaven help us if this is what our leaders truly believe. I was shocked to see Trump sucking up to Graham in his recent SC victory speech. Does he really thing Lindsey is a 'good guy,' which I recall Trump saying? (The crowd showed better judgment, by booing him.)

Somehow I suspect this was not because Trump admires Graham; he may just respect the fact that Graham is a powerful man in DC and it's better to have him as a 'friend' than an enemy.

Or as the quote from 'The Godfather' went: "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

Trump is, after all, fighting a criminal gang in DC, and 99% of the Dems and 85% of the GOP are part of that gang.
