I think that may be, because the posts were made a day or so after the original article, when many people already had finished reading the comments.
As you know only the person you are replying to actually gets a notification that you commented. It used to be that everyone in that sub-thread would get a notice -- that was better but still not perfect.

You're probably right about the time laps...
That's why I always return reading the precedent article and its comments before reading the newest !
