So some tips as a Black Hills local: August is exactly the worst time to visit because Sturgis is the 2nd week of August and 500,000 people descend upon our little mountains (which might be why all the rooms are full). If there are no lodging options in Deadwood available, Spearfish is a very good secondary option. The local attractions will likely be very busy, so look at lesser-known/out of the way trails if you want some peace and quiet. Don’t believe the people at DC Booth when they tell you they stock fish around the state.
Other than that, have fun and give us sales tax money!

Sturgis ends August 11, GART begins August 15
It bleeds over a little bit, won’t be as busy as actual Rally but it will still be much busier than normal.
Best time to visit the Hills IMO is May or September
