Contrast this with the 'best in class' from US, Amodei's 'Claude' which 'promises' not to use any of your proprietary data for 'training' its models. DoD was using Claude because of that promise (until they declared it a national security threat), so perhaps Amodei is keeping his word; but given the right motivations any promise can be broken.

Imagine a lithium backup fire immediately torching the foothills and close by neighborhoods. If these data centers are so good and necessary, why all the secrecy? There are also emerging technologies that could demonstrate the monolithic data center model is already obsolete.
Subscriptions and barriers to entry? Like most software, AI has rushed to capture the public with the free usage then push users into subscription models. They must have learned from the dotcom meltdown of 2000ish and thus raced to monetization and psyop level PR as rapidly as possible. Actual proof of benefits is way down the list. While most don’t blink at the base $20/month, to get real work done like run coding models to build apps or set up your business with agents, the tiers quickly push into $200 to $400/month per seat and higher from there. So what about open source? There are excellent options, BUT you need a robust computer to run useful models. I’ve seen entry versions for $2500, with better options in the $5000 range, and even then, could pay off quickly. There’s a hitch though: the data center explosion has pushed the specific memory needed over 4x $$$ in recent months making DIY options even more costly. I worry about Saudi Arabia being our new best friend. From this country came the majority of 9-11 terrorists who killed nearly 3,000 Americans and others and maimed others. The anti Israel, anti Jew rhetoric has ramped up and I do not have any trust in a peaceful existence between it and Gaza, still run by the terrorists Hezbollah, despite the new brokered deal with the the so called legitimate head of the government of Lebanon. The new realignment will arm Lebanon and make all the leaders richer but peace? Fantasy world.

You are right that politics in the Mideast can be complex and alliances can shift like the desert sands. Some problems are more persistent than others; I believe much of it will clear up once the Iranian problem is dealt with. Now those guys, you'd be absolutely right not to trust any further than you can throw them. But the majority of the Iranian people do not want a theocratic government enforced by a paramilitary force, the IRGC, either. Trump is giving the people of Iran the chance to get rid of those guys. If they do, and I think Trump expects it to happen fairly soon, then the whole Mideast situation will settle down.
One point of evidence is that despite the Iranians attacking all of the other Gulf states in 'retribution' for their alliances and basing agreements with the USA, the Gulf states (including Saudi Arabia) have steadfastly supported the US in this fight. They also want the stability that will come when Iran has a more reasonable government.
Iran has been a problem for 47 years, since the British Cabal kicked out their own guy, the Shah, in favor of the mullahs. Probably because the Shah did not want the Cabal's forever wars -- they needed new guys to stir up the Mideast. And they got them. The question is, how long will it take for the Iranian people to rise up and kick them out.
When that happens, Iran's proxies including Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthis will wither at the vine. Without a continuous flow of cash and weapons from the mullahs, they will have little choice but to return to more normal lives. Which will be good for everyone, most of all Israel.
It would help, too, when the intel agencies in Israel, US, Britain, et al, are contained as well. When they stop stirring the pot, i.e., Laura Loomer, then people could gain a better understanding of the overall situation.
The last I checked in on Laura Loomer, she was at a big cross point location filming the invaders pouring into our country as Mayorkas was telling us the border was secure. I’m mixed on the AI boom. Regardless of the narrative wars, the AI transition is going to leave massive damage in its wake before some balance comes to the forefront. Here are a few troubling aspects as I see them:
Secrets? While the AI data centers is pushed as a infrastructure investment, it’s being run on the “Walmart takes over small town” model of lawyers, money and ironclad NDAs securing opaque development deals with zero public scrutiny. Here in Colorado Springs, the committee just approved such a deal for council vote to convert a light industrial center, located in the absolute worst location up against the front range (or best based on nearby home values). Imagine a lithium backup fire immediately torching the foothills and close by neighborhoods. If these data centers are so good and necessary, why all the secrecy? There are also emerging technologies that could demonstrate the monolithic data center model is already obsolete.
Subscriptions and barriers to entry? Like most software, AI has rushed to capture the public with the free usage then push users into subscription models. They must have learned from the dotcom meltdown of 2000ish and thus raced to monetization and psyop level PR as rapidly as possible. Actual proof of benefits is way down the list. While most don’t blink at the base $20/month, to get real work done like run coding models to build apps or set up your business with agents, the tiers quickly push into $200 to $400/month per seat and higher from there. So what about open source? There are excellent options, BUT you need a robust computer to run useful models. I’ve seen entry versions for $2500, with better options in the $5000 range, and even then, could pay off quickly. There’s a hitch though: the data center explosion has pushed the specific memory needed over 4x $$$ in recent months making DIY options even more costly. What happens to this pay to play model when bigAI begins to amortize the cost of data center infrastructure, water and energy consumption?
Jobs, what jobs? Are you still advising your kids to learn coding? No doubt this is a giant mess, and my heart goes out to kids entering college for their CS degree, or even a few years out yet. The market is already devastated for entry level and even mid level jobs. Is this real though? Not really, but does that matter, perception and all. Here’s what I see unfolding. For the next few years, the “fog of war” is masking various moves, and eventually, we’ll find a balance of having humans code with AI assists. Getting there will be messy, and as usual, colleges will be churning out “vibe coders” that fail to understand how things are made. Industry will learn this painful lesson the hard way, and backtrack to cultivating experienced coders shepherding AI. In the meantime, players like Microsoft are offshoring jobs under the guise of AI. Other players like Spotify are all-in AI generated coding, with a few “seniors” to oversee projects. Some companies are massively reducing jobs, not just coding, but coming for marketing, customer service, accounting and legal, to name a few. Is this good? Will it save money?
