LOVE Badlands Media ❤️

Thank you for today’s takes.

I do love BB’s mind but I am not keen on “Nuclear America” for our future. I can see it as a cleaner short stepping stone to completely disengage from the NWO Green scam but to go all out on pouring billions into nuclear infrastructure, no. And to use “Tesla” in the definition of a nuclear future?? While I recognize that BB is referring to Musk, still Tesla to me is Nikola Tesla and more aligned with the zero-point energy field which is where the billions should go!!

I agree re: Tesla. He was building a free wireless energy grid somehow using Wardencliffe towers, not nuclear waste.

Not sure where this is going yet.

Nuclear energy has a fuel cost that is a fraction of coal. It requires a small fraction of the land area needed for solar or wind. The net result is it has always been the intelligent answer. What killed off nuclear was leftist political activists.

The best part is there is no reason for what you call “pouring billions into nuclear infrastructure”. The private sector will quickly flood money into a smart energy plan. The government killed nuclear with crazy, un-justified regulations that changed daily and caused the costs to sky rocket.

Why the Left decided to do this has never been explained. I think it was because they want America to fall behind. Energy is the key to progress and we were progressing way too fast. So, the “progressives” had to kill our progress! Now, if you can explain that irony I will be forever grateful.

Why not go 100% clean, infinitely renewable free energy from the zero-point energy field…small (breadbox size) solid state structure, sitting in the corner of your house to power everything?

The only answer (because I believe the science and tech exists) is money.

You are certainly correct about leftist political activists. My question is, what about the radioactive waste? Have they solved the problem of what to do with that?

Yucca Mountain was built years ago to house our Nuclear waste. Harry Reed, senator of Nevada begged to have it in his state. Then, after $ billions was spent, he outlawed its use. So, the Left picked our pockets and then screwed us again by helping to kill nuclear power.

I have followed this craziness for over 50 years and it just boggles the mind. Thank goodness more folks are seeing this. The Leftists are anti-American and want us to fail. They are betting on it and are doing their best to make their plans come to fruition. Our job is to expose them and stop the silliness. I am greatly encouraged with our progress lately. The more of us who understand what MAGA is really about the better. Opening the door to Nuclear opens the door to answering who and why it was killed.

Jimmy Carter was a Nuclear engineer for God’s sake. But he killed it with unnecessary regulation by design. But why? There is the question that needs tone answered.

Thank you, very interesting. I vaguely remember Yucca Mtn. We had a crazy woman here in OK who stopped a nuclear plant, I think it was called Black Fox, in the 1970’s. Now I hear ppl on various Badlands shows saying nuclear isn’t even “real”!

You know a conventional power plant generates electricity at about 500,000 volts AC. Solar generates electricity at about 1 volt DC. This is a severe limitation because the biggest weakness of power transmission is line resistance and DC is terrible at this.

Tesla tried to argue this reality with Edison but Edison liked the safety of DC. This rift between these guys is what created G.E. And Westinghouse. The winner of the contest was alternating current and the grid today exists because AC is transmittable over long distances where DC is not. So, that 1 volt of DC solar must somehow be stepped up to 500,000 volts and converted to AC. Wind is similar but easier because it can be generated at maybe 500 volts and transformed times a thousand.

In either renewable case it takes massive government subsidies to make them competitive. The question is, “Why?” What crazy silliness makes anyone vote to subsidize a losing proposition? I hope this helps explain our real problem. It is tainted politicians and corrupt government. This is what MAGA is actually about fixing. Power generation is just a diversion from the truth.

OK Jim, I've been working in the power industry for almost four decades now, and I'd like to clear up a few misconceptions here, mostly for the edification of others who lack such experience.

First of all, DC is about 40% more efficient for long distance transmission than AC. This is because a power line insulated for 500 kV (500,000 volts) can transmit DC at a continuous 500 kV voltage, whereas for AC it transmits a signal with a peak voltage of 500 kV, but an effective voltage of about 350 kV (for a sine wave, the peak and effective voltage are related by the square root of two, 1.414159...) Line current is limited by heating of the conductor; the DC current and AC effective current (70.7% of the peak current) are the same. Net result, all things being equal, a transmission line can carry ~41% more power operating on DC than on AC with the same losses. (Conductor resistance is not much different for DC and AC, and in fact, because of a phenomenon known as 'skin effect,' AC current at high enough frequencies can only use the outer part of a conductor, while DC uses the whole thing. However, skin effect is not a significant effect at power-line AC frequencies of 50-60 Hz: skin depth is about 8.4 mm, so for conductors up to 17 mm or 0.67 inch it doesn't much matter.)

Second thing: while solar cells indeed generate electricity at around 1 Vdc (this is a function of the band-gap energy of silicon), they are always assembled in arrays that typically put out somewhere around 50 Vdc per panel, and the panels put in series arrays to result in around 600 volts DC. These series strings are paralleled with other similar strings, and the 600 Vdc of hundreds of panels converted to AC (using 'inverters') at something around 5 kV, to connect to the transmission grid.

Most rotating generators in power plants also put out something in this range. That voltage, whether coming from a solar power field or a gas turbine generator, is stepped up to a higher voltage, most commonly 230 to 500 kV, to connect to the transmission grid. The device used to do this is called a 'generation step up' transformer. It is sort of reverse of what is done in a distribution substation, where transmission lines at high voltage are stepped down to around 10 kV to connect to 'feeders' going out in residential neighborhoods and commercial business parks.

Third thing: The main reason that DC was not competitive with AC 'back in the day' is that there was no technology that could convert DC voltages this way -- up and down, first up for efficient transmission; then down for safe distribution. For AC, iron-core transformers with copper wire windings, simple devices that could be made even 100 years ago, provided this function.

Today, however, solid-state devices provide the means to step DC up and down, and convert back and forth between AC and DC. The main reason the grid stays AC today is not that it is more efficient (it is not) but because that's the way it is. There is a huge investment in AC transmission and distribution infrastructure (which lasts for many decades), and it does not make economic sense to change it all over. DC is used in key locations, where the efficiency makes a difference -- the undersea link between New Zealand's North and South Islands is one example.

Last, the main debate of AC vs DC was between Edison and Westinghouse. AC won for the reasons stated above, though the debate was not really couched in those terms -- it was more of a public spectacle, with one man showing a prisoner being executed in an electric chair with the other's preferred type of power (ridiculous really; either type of voltage would kill the victim) and other Barnum & Bailey type stunts.

That said, you're right about renewables, simply because they are not that efficient -- they rarely put out their rated power, due to various limitations -- not to mention they are not what a power engineer calls 'dispatchable.' As in, a dispatcher can call up the generation operator and say 'Turn on the generator.' You get power when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing, and rarely at the time and place where it is needed. This results in the system operator having to maintain 'spinning reserve' -- typically gas turbines, fired up, spinning and connected to the grid, but operating at only enough torque to overcome frictional losses. When the wind slows (or goes too fast), or clouds come between the sun and the solar panels, or the sun goes down, the system automatically throttles up the turbines to make up the shortfall.

Greenies who buy the 'renewable' line do not understand any of these things, they think with their heart instead of their mind. Corrupt politicians (and renewable vendors) are more than happy to line their pockets assuaging the greenies' dismay with 'fossil fuels.'

Wild Bill, Is it true that those ugly “wind mills” only last about 20 years and that it is cheaper to just build new ones rather than refurbish them? Also is it true that their bases are concrete deep in the ground and that the land is left barren?

Expand full comment

Hi BlueSky101,

I am not involved much with renewables (I work in the 'bulk electricity system' i.e. transmission lines part of the business), but 20 years is a reasonable lifetime to expect from a machine like that. The reason that it is cheaper to build new rather than refurbish is primarily that the technology has changed enough that those old turbines are not only worn out, but obsolete.

And yes to withstand the forces generated by high wind, the foundations must be buried in the ground and they are typically about the same size above the ground and below. Much like a tree -- laws of physics are the same for nature and artificial devices.

One of their main drawbacks is that wind turbines can only generate their nameplate power at one specific wind speed, or at best a narrow range. The power available in the wind increases if I remember right by the cube of wind speed -- twice the wind speed, eight times the power. But if you go past the rated wind speed, the power is too much and the turbines must be shut down by 'feathering' their props into the wind, lest they be destroyed by excessive forces they were not designed to withstand.

Some years back I lived in a little place called Crowsnest Pass, Alberta. This town sits just to the east of the continental divide, in a small valley. As it turns out, it is one of the windiest places in Canada (some places in Newfoundland are windier), and someone built a single medium-sized wind turbine at the eastern end of the Pass -- presumably to see how much power it could generate. This turbine was built by one of the big European makers. Anyway one day my wife and I were returning home from a trip to Calgary or maybe Lethbridge, to see the turbine stopped and the three blades bent back to the point the turbine could not rotate without hitting its support mast. The winds in the Pass are called 'chinook winds' and they blow quite a bit of the time, routinely exceeding 100 km/h -- often, exceeding hurricane force which starts at 119 km/h (74 mph). Winds like that can make a mess of a wind turbine in short order, in addition to picking up gravel and throwing it into your face. They had to take off the blades (bent and useless, beyond repair) and replace them. Doing that very often puts a pretty big dent in the business model.

As for barren land, I see no reason why the soil could not be replaced and seeded after the foundation is built, leaving a small access trail for maintenance. I drive fairly often through the Tehachapi Pass in California, between Barstow and Bakersfield in Kern County, and there are lots of wind turbines there because as with Crowsnest, passes concentrate the wind. My recollection is that the ground under the turbines appears to have been replaced and seeded. I'll have to look more closely next time I pass through.

I live in a town with a municipal light dept that went with windmills back in the mid 1980s - 8 of them, each about 100’ tall - there were repair problems and they lasted about 22 yrs. They were replaced by 2 60 ton turbines manufactured by Furhlander in Germany, “each sits atop a 230’ high monopole tower, anchored to the bedrock by a 40’ across hexagonal, 20’ deep cast-in-place concrete foundation reinforced by an intricate, incredibly dense tangle of steel rebar, and anchored into bedrock with eight 50’ long rock anchors each. Harnessing the wind is accomplished by three 130’ long 6 ton fiberglass and steel blades, the tips of which will reach some 360’ into the sky to snag the wind”

I have never liked them.

Thank you for the clarification. I was told the reason for AC versus DC was the transmission efficiency years ago by an electrical engineer. I thought he had the facts correct, but I was not in a position to argue. It made sense and AC won the battle.

Short distribution lines were present in the original systems that were installed in NY City and the power was DC. But when the power was to be coming from Niagara Falls and hundreds of miles were involved, he said that favored AC and Tesla’s system won. Like I said, it just made sense to me when he explained it.

Expand full comment

He was not wrong, nor was your understanding incorrect. At that time, with no way to convert DC power from one voltage to another, the need to transmit power over longer distances required higher voltages. However power was both generated and consumed at lower voltages than those most efficient for long-distance transmission. AC, with iron-core transformers, was the only technology capable of doing that, at that time and for many decades subsequent.

What my comment was intended to show was that, at an equivalent voltage rating (insulation level), DC is more efficient than AC. Without efficient means to convert DC from one voltage level to another, however, it is not practical for the reason mentioned by your friend: he was talking about overall system efficiency. It's simply not practical to transmit power for any distance at levels of 120 or 240 or even 600 volts -- the power lost in the lines is proportional to current squared, where the power transmitted in the lines is proportional to current. Doubling the current results in twice the power delivered, but four times the losses. Doubling the voltage also results in twice the power delivered, but no change in the losses.

So clearly for long transmission lines, higher voltage a must. It requires longer insulators, and the lines to be higher (for safety), but those are minor costs compared to the increased efficiency. To transmit power from Niagara Falls to New York City required high voltage. The only way to do it then was with AC.

Short article summarizing Edison, Tesla and Westinghouse and their contributions to the electric power industry:

https://www.history.com/news/what-was-the-war-of-the-currents

This article says that the transmission line in question was from Niagara Falls to Buffalo, only 26 miles. Even at that (short by today's standards) length, DC was not up to the task. The problem becomes more severe, the longer the lines are. But making transformers to convert AC from low to high voltage and back again was practical then and still is today.

Unfortunately, the Chinese have cornered the market for large utility-grade transformers the same way they cornered the market for solar panels: ruthless price cutting to drive out all competition, then increasing prices to claim the monopolist's advantage. Nobody dares try to re-enter the market, knowing the Chinese will cut prices again to drive them out.

When my town needed funding to upgrade roads, they went with grant money and the catch was blueprints that no one was happy with afterwards. Right now, we have a 1/4 mike sidewalk being constructed (with grant money) - the locals call it “the sidewalk to nowhere” and it came about as a solution to winter plowing problems that were damaging the side of the pavement!?
